Let there be no misunderstanding - No, you don't have to go to these places. No, these are not by definition the best spots. After having travelled in South America for two years we realize that it's no problem here to find your own beautiful spots for camping. We decided to continue the page anyway, for people who would like some tips about camping spots which we enjoyed or found practical - please note that this is always our personal experience.

N.B. We use the following system

HDDD.MM.MMM -WGS 84

1. Mercedes

On the north side of the river, near some weekend cottages and a police post. The police didn't mind our staying here. Nice, quiet spot with shade.

gps  S 33.14.366 - W 058.02.096

2. Carmelo

Camping Municipal along the Rio de la Plata, free of charge. Shady and clean, with cold showers.

gps  S 34.00.678 - W 058.17.562

Here is more information on Carmelo and Conchillas.

3. Colonia del Sacramento

The Camping Municipal [mentioned in LP] has closed down. Camping is possible at the sports fields of "La Caballada", bordering the town. You leave Route 1 at km 174.500

Friendly owner. Toilets and hot shower

price 100 pesos per night  [2 persons and car]

gps  S 34.27.277 - W 057.49.159

We also slept in the car in downtown Colonia, on Plaza Mayor. Nice and quiet, and no problems with the police.

gps  S 34.28.337 - W 057.51.137

Here is more information on Colonia del Sacramento.

4. La Paz

A small village between Colonia and Montevideo with a shady campground. Nice place but toilets are not very clean. The owner will make a fire so you can have a hot shower.

price  100 pesos per night [2 persons and car]

gps  S 34.21.376 - W 057.18.731

5. Montevideo

Montevideo doesn't have a campground. We spent the night on a field along the rambla [boulevard] behind the Ancap petrol station, near Parque Paula Cayetes [the golf club].

gps  S 34.55.730 - W 056.09.748

6. El Pinar

Found a quiet spot in the dunes.

gps  S 34.48.298 - W 055.53.821

7. Salamanca cave

Going from Aigüa towards Rocha you see a sign saying "Grutta de Salamanca". From here a 9 km dirt road leads to a beautiful campsite, one of our most beautiful ever.

gps  S 34.04.760 - W. 054.36.437

8 Punta del Diablo

No campground so we stood somewhere along the beach in the centre of town. This was just fine because we were here outside the main season.

gps  S 34.02.574 - W 053.32.344
